SAFE Crossroads Podcast #21 SAFE School, Class IV, Reaching Bedrock

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

In this Episode

In Class IV of the SAFE Network School we get down to bedrock on one of the most important aspects of the SAFE Network. We have loads of fun, actually. It's back to school for sure, but also has a bright gem of entertainment to help bring the lesson home.

With this material we are able to get our feet on solid ground on not only how the network organizes and administers so many intricate actions, but we see the foundations of the very different, but very powerful method of establishing consensus and truth within the SAFE Network.

Please understand that the data dealt with here may lack the full clarity it should if you have not become quite familiar with the material in the previous SAFE Network School Classes. Going over the relevant sections of the SAFE Network Wiki and these podcasts and referenced material more than once is recommended for best comprehension. The technology underlying the SAFE Network contains a number of new innovations/discoveries, all in play at once. Understanding does not yield well to snapshots.

Africoin Report #5: Voices of Kenema

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Written by guest authors: Mamadu Sallieu Barrie, Abubakar Mansaray, and Abdulrahman Jalloh

We are three young and energetic youths striving hard to make a change in our country. We are not yet university students, but on the verge of enrolling (depending on our performance) in the just concluded West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

We first encountered bitcoin in January 2015 through a friend, who later became a brother, called Chernoh Saeed Sow. We met him on Facebook, one of the most outstanding technological social media inventions over the years. Anyway, we are not here to talk about Facebook, but we are to talk about bitcoin, which was invented by a programmer named Satoshi Nakamoto, and has become the world's most outstanding and revolutionary invention in the last ten years of technological innovation in the monetary system.

'"Mamadu Sallieu and Mansaray Abubakarr

When bitcoin was presented to us by Chero, it was a whole new ball game for us. We didn't understand a thing about it and how it works, but due to the relentless help of our brother, and our thirst for knowledge, we started learning some basics and keywords about it--words like cryptocurrency, blockchain, digital money, virtual money, Satoshi Nakamoto, online payment system, network nodes, etc.

We started our own research on bitcoin after Chero's last visit to Kenema. We engaged in lots of dialogue and debates about bitcoin. He encouraged us to ask questions and he provided readied answers. He taught us that bitcoin is much more than a payment system: it's a technology.

We were intrigued. We started thinking about some of bitcoin's fantastic qualities that differentiate it from other payment systems, like banks. Qualities such as having no middleman, no interest, little or no fees involved in transactions, and its decentralized nature. These are qualities that will very much suit the monetary system of a country like Sierra Leone today.

Bitcoin will even help to minimize, if not eradicate, corruption and mismanagement (which are the order of the day here), due to its fair and transparent transactions recorded in the blockchain. We paused our research on bitcoin, however, because of our examination and decided to resume after. Now that we are through with our exam, the quest for Sierra Leoneans to embrace bitcoin and begin using it starts proper for us.

Having got the awareness about this technological advancement in monetary system, we did not lag behind in making the dream come true. One of our first priorities was to holistically accept the concept and propound the initiative the best way we could; and in doing that, a collective effort of all and sundry is needed.

'"Abdulrahman Jalloh

We made connections with Chero in order to not only satisfy our curiosity about the concept, but also to bring it to the notice of every nook and cranny of the country, especially the Kenema district, so that people may adhere and accept the good news. At this juncture, youths, traders, workers, students, civil servants, etc., became our target, but we started with youths and some of our colleagues in and outside of school. Without rest, we started making visitations at youth centers, points, and metropolitan areas. We thought the idea of bitcoin could only be loved and appreciated by us; not when we met with a vast majority of technologically inclined individuals who were on the pipeline to take up the venture.

It gladdens our hearts to see such a tremendous acceptance. People were even more intrigued and happy to accept bitcoin. As a result of retorting with convincing answers and logical points, we can with no hesitancy presume that our country and her citizens are ready to be "Bitcoinized." We are very much aware of the hurdles and struggles on the road to achieving such an unprecedented feat in our country. Creating the platform for people to start using bitcoin is never an easy thing to do for us because of our lack of materials, funds, and the experience needed to achieve such an accomplishment.

'"Abdulrahman Jalloh and Mansaray Abubakarr

Still, we believe in making the impossible possible. That is why we seek the guidance, knowledge, and experience of those who know more than us about this technology. Due to the relentless and tireless effort of Chero, he has established the Sierra Leone Bitcoin Network (SLBNet), and he is currently working on the documentation of its registration and the creation of its website.

What is slowing the whole process down is the lack of funds, as we mentioned earlier, at his disposal. Nevertheless, on behalf of SLBNet group, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude and thanks to all the members of the Africoin Report group blog; members like Daniel Modell, Mark Mayer, Tim Tayshun, Trevor Twala, Cheryl Hulseapple, and many others, for their unmatched guidance and help to us so far. We hope and pray that you will continue.

A very big thank you to our brother Chernoh Saeed Sow for introducing and educating us about bitcoin. Thank you so much, brother. If it hadn't been for you, we wouldn't have been where we are today. No one deserves more gratitude than you, brother. We will forever be indebted to you. Thank you so much for giving us such an opportunity.

We have come this far against all odds, and we are never going to relent.

Bitcoin Makes It Possible.

A Message from Chernoh

We will be so grateful if this trip could be sponsored. This message is for all bitcoiners in the community. Please help spread the gospel in Sierra Leone by donating any amount to sponsor this trip. I am shooting a documentary of the trip and will upload the video to our YouTube account, about how everything happens, so we need a video camera to do the shootings. I am compiling notes that we will donate for free to the people who might be interested in reading about bitcoin and more. I also have some tutorials for beginners and some wallet apps. We are budgeting US$250 for this trip. Therefore, any tip and donation will help us greatly to make this a dream come true. Just tip me if you want to help or donate. Thank you.

EB101 - Ryan Shea & Muneeb Ali: Bringing Decentralization to Identity with Blockchain ID and Onename

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

A brilliant fact about crypto-economic blockchains is that they enable the construction of naming systems that transcend limits imposed by Zooko's triangle. Traditional naming systems such as human names, Domain Name System (DNS) and Facebook profile names are subject to Zooko's triangle and cannot be secure, human memorable and decentralised at once. For instance human names such as Meher Roy are human-memorable and decentralised but not secure (nothing prevents hundreds of people being called Meher Roy). Domain Names like http://ift.tt/1DMdu5m are secure and human-memorable but require a central authority to hand out names.

OneName leverages Bitcoin to build a Global Identification system called Blockchain Id. Blockchain IDs for users can be associated with real world identity data such as social media profiles, government issued papers etc. In this episode we converse with Ryan Shea and Muneeb, co-founders and leaders of OneName, Blockstore and BlockStack. They explain the rationale and vision behind their push for a Global Decentralised Identification and Verification system.

Topics covered include:

  • Zooko's triangle and how Bitcoin breaks the triangle
  • The general idea behind Blockchain Id, how it works and its component transactions
  • Why OneName migrated their Blockchain Id system from the Namecoin to the Bitcoin blockchain
  • Technical design of Blockstore and how it enables decentralised storage and association of large datasets to Blockchain Ids
  • Vision and use cases for Decentralised identity, authentication and identity verification.
  • The notion of Probabilistic Identity

Each week I go through each episode and hand pick the best parts of the discussions they have, but if you would like to hear their full discussions, please visit their soundcloud account linked in the show notes. Chris and Josh I think bring something new to the cryptocurrency space. They are skeptical of pretty much every project, and they can be very rough guys when you talk with them. A lot of the times I disagree with them, and many believe them to be wrong and rude, but love them or hate them, in my opinion they carry an important role in the community by making you really think of the tough questions that many people do not ask. This week they had great guest on and their show and it went about 4 hours. Also since we missed their recap last week, we will be doing an extended "Bitcoin Censored" show this week. Enjoy

MMM Global Republic of Bitcoin: Crypto's Next Scandal?

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I have seen many scams come and go in my two years of following crypto. Altcoins have promised the world and delivered hot air. Exchanges have disappeared with my coins. Dubious links posted in trollboxes have attempted to install keyloggers and trojans on my computer.

Recently I came across a scam of even more alarming proportions. It is called 'œMMM Global Republic of Bitcoin.' See their Facebook Site and their website. Those who follow Ponzi schemes will immediately recognize the name MMM. In the 1990s, Russian fraudster Sergei Mavrodi ran one of Russia's largest Ponzi schemes with the same name (see note*). Savvy marketing and promises of 1000%+ returns suckered tens of thousands of people into investing their savings in Mavrodi's scheme. By 1994, when MMM's offices were closed due to tax evasion, Mavrodi owed his investors beween 100 billion and 3 trillion rubles (between tens of millions and billions of dollars). Mavrodi spent a few years in jail, but by 2011, he was responsible for at least two other pyramid schemes.

Now Mavrodi is back in business, bigger and badder than ever. This time he is using Bitcoin.

Mavrodi's new scheme is exploding in popularity, especially in India, South Africa, and the Philippines. MMM Global Republic of Bitcoin bills itself as a 'œGlobal Fund of mutual aid.' Participants help each other with gifts of money, and in return they receive an equal amount of 'œMavrodis.' (Think of it like an altcoin.) Mavrodis grow at a rate of 20% to 100% per month, depending on a participant's engagement with social media. Once Mavrodis are 'œconfirmed,' participants can 'œask for help' from other users according to how many Mavrodis they have. Theoretically, if I donated $100 of bitcoin today, and every day I completed a task, like sharing MMM videos on Facebook or uploading testimonials to Youtube, I would have $200 worth of Mavro by the end of the month, and could then 'œrequest help' in that amount.

As the website explains:

MMM is a community of people providing each other financial help on the principle of gratuitousness, reciprocity and benevolence. We use BITCOIN infrastructure in our transactions.

In MMM you don't have to make contracts or pledge your property. In MMM there are no lenders and no debtors. Everything is very simple: one participant asks for help '" another one helps.

The only thing that MMM demands from its participants is to be honest and kind to each other. You ask for financial help when you need it, you give financial help when you are able to do it.

On the surface, the organization seems unremarkable'"one more scam among countless others. The website is not particularly slick and the content is full of grammatical errors, cheesy emoticons, and over-the-top enthusiasm about astronomical returns.

Nevertheless, certain factors lead me to believe that MMM is poised to become a major scandal for Bitcoin.

First, it is exploding in popularity, especially among people who have little previous exposure to Bitcoin. I discovered MMM about a month ago on a WhatsApp chat group of South Africans and Zimbabweans who were interested in Bitcoin. A number of people joined that group in order to buy bitcoin to participate in MMM, or to understand what Bitcoin was all about because they had learned about it via their participation in the organization.

The organization is increasingly being noticed by the South African media. It has also gained the attention of the National Consumer Commission, with spokesperson Trevor Hattingh recently issuing this warning:

The matter needs to be assessed by the (commission) to establish the origins of MMM, and to study their business practices.

In the meantime, consumers are strongly advised to not participate in what could very well be an outlawed pyramid scheme, where their monies could in all probability be lost.

A second reason for concern is that when confronted with evidence that MMM may be a scam, the participants I spoke with were adamant about the organization's trustworthiness. They reported receiving payouts worth far more than they had put in. One participant I interviewed told me he put in 6,000 rand and has withdrawn more than 70,000 rand so far, partially because of referral bonuses he accrued. These apparently positive results are supported by the 'œhappiness videos' that participants upload to the MMM website after successful withdrawals. These videos depict elated participants who are withdrawing thousands of dollars'"often in bitcoin. These positive experiences indicate that the organization may be in a growth stage, during which it is still able sustain itself on new participants. If it is big now, it's about to get bigger.

A third reason for concern is that most of the participants in South Africa began using MMM with fiat, not bitcoin, but now they are making the switch to crypto. As one participant explained:

[The reason is] because of the banks who still question people when they have too much money in their accounts. When using bitcoins there is no central authority involved.

This means that components of the existing MMM user base are increasingly discovering one of Bitcoin's major benefits'"it is possible to be your own bank. They are understandably enthusiastic about this. Their funds cannot be seized or frozen if banks notice 'œsuspicious' activity. Of course, this also means that it is harder for banks and governments to shut down the organization. It furthermore suggests that these new Bitcoin users stand to become disillusioned with Bitcoin because of its association with MMM. If (when) the scheme collapses, it is likely that many participants will lose the bitcoin they just learned to love.

I will be watching MMM closely to see what happens. As it turns out, I am not the only one doing so. Coindesk just reported that Bobby Lee, CEO of Chinese Bitcoin exchange BTCC, attributes bitcoin's present bull run at least partially to MMM.

I sincerely hope I am wrong about MMM. If I am right, and the organization is a scam, many of my friends in South Africa who are just discovering Bitcoin are about to get burned.

I'll leave you with Sergai Mavrovi explaining himself:

SAFE Crossroads Podcast #20 SAFE School, Class III, Deep and Wide

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

In this Episode

In Class III of the SAFE Network School we break down some of the underlying computer technology needed to get a better grip on why the SAFE Network can do what it is designed to do. We take a closer look at the Vault structure and get an understanding of what a distributed hash table is about, and much more. Find out what David Irvine has to say about how to go about understanding the technology of the SAFE Network, from his years of experience telling others about it.

Come along as we start to peel apart the "secrets" of how the SAFE Network is designed and why it is so powerful. There are no secrets, actually. It just takes a little patience, perhaps some repetition. But it's worth it!

Unless you are already quite familiar with the SAFE Network, technically, it is recommended that you listen to the other Classes in this series first. Reading and following along with the SAFE Network Wiki (linked below) is also a great idea.

EB100 - Juan Benet: Decentralizing The Web With The Inter-Planetary File System (IPFS)

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

We've made it to episode 100! Our guest for our celebratory episode is Juan Benet, inventor of the Inter-Planetary File System and founder of Protocol Labs. IPFS is a distributed file system that seeks to connect all computing devices with the same system of files. The possibilities for IPFS could range from distributed cloud hosting to websites without central servers to even replacing HTTP. It's a project as audacious as any we've had on the podcast and Juan did an outstanding job explaining the technology and vision.

Topics covered included:

  • Why HTTP is broken and how IPFS could complement and ultimately replace it
  • The different technologies IPFS is based on including DHT, Git, Bittorrent and SFS
  • How IPFS could enable the 'permanent web' by distributing file storage
  • Content-addressing and how hosting works on IPFS
  • Mutable content and the Interplanetary Naming System (IPNS)
  • Filecoin and incentivizing hosting on IPFS
  • Why IPFS is a great fit for smart contracts
  • How he wants to build and monetize core internet protocols with his company Protocol Labs

Robert Ross is a Counterparty Foundation Community Director and the Director of FoldingCoin Inc. Each week Robert and various guests will bring you the news of what has been going on in the Counterparty communities and also touch base on the other Bitcoin 2.0 communities.

I am happy to announce the ability for paid sponsorships. I accept any Counterparty Token that is on CoinMarketCap.com in addition to TOPFOLDER tokens. Please click below:

Thank you to Charles Hoskinson for coming on the show today.

Also thank you to Chris DeRose, and Joshua Unseth for the chit-chat recap of the week. I am looking into finding a permalink so you can simply click here to join the chit chat (an admin setting in the channel needs to change), but in the meantime please tweet @derosetech and he will grant you access.

Please contact me rross@foldingcoin.net with any Counterparty projects you are working on, with suggestions to feature them on the show. Or contact me if you would like assistance or advice on how you can create your project on the Counterparty platform. I may not be able to answer your question or help your project, but I will do my best to find the person who can.

If you are an independent artist and would like to hear your song on this show, please email me at rross@foldingcoin.net and we can arrange something. Thank you to Cyrus Youngman and the Kingfishers for the audio segways.

Please join in the discussions on the forums at theLTBNetwork.com and counterpartytalk.org.

All tips, donations, and sponsorship payments from this podcast will be used to better the Counterparty Foundation.

Project News

LTBCARD - LIMITED SERIES CARD IN COLLABORATION WITH THE LTB NETWORK! LTBCARD is our new blockchain-based trading card, issued in a limited series of 1,000 units and designed exclusively for our partner - The LTB Network. The LTB Network is a publishing platform created for content providers to present the ideas and people involved with cryptocurrency. The LTBCARD will be soon playable in Moonga as well as in Spells of Genesis. The so awaited moment has finally come: we burnt the unsold BitCrystals and GENESISCARDs from the Token Sale. Until September 30th, we were accepting and processing complaints and remarks about the distributed amount of BCY and we were verifying those transactions. We are very happy and proud to announce you our partnership with IndieSquare! IndieSquare is providing the first mobile Counterparty wallet - IndieSquare wallet, an easy-to-use wallet with an attractive interface, which makes Counterparty accessible for everyone! The SoG Team will work together with IndieSquare to produce an intuitive mobile Counterparty wallet. You will be able to connect the wallet easily to Spells of Genesis and to transfer your blockchain-based cards into the game.

  • I have been working on revamping the xcpassets.org website, and one major change that I have done is move the URL to Counterpartynews.com. I got a lot of feedback from users that they wished to see more news related information and less links to other projects. So when you go to Counterpartynews.com you will see this very change. The main thing was to get the front page looking clean and crisp to start, but I have plans of adding more Counterparty related help for those new comers to the space. Already Counterpartynews.com has over 15 RSS feeds ranging from the Foundation, to Tokenly, to each individual token news. Each news article that you click will open a new tab to the original webpage in which the RSS feed is coming from, rather then hosting the articles themselves on CPN. Please check out the new website and tell me what you think, as I would love for this to be a great tool when looking for Counterparty related news on the web. If you have any requests or feedback, leave them here in the show comments or send me an email to rross@foldingcoin.net.

  • In FoldingCoin news, Joe has the distribution calculations stable and working. Now its time to revamp the statistics page. This will be a work in progress, but by doing the statistics page at the same time of revamping the calculation server, everything should be pretty automated for FoldingCoin soon. This is a good time to revamp everything as James Sewell, the lead developer of FoldingCoin, is stepping down for a bit to focus on his local Kinsmen charity club. The amount of work that James has put in so far for the FoldingCoin project has been unmatched. Because of James FoldingCoin is what it is today and I am eternally grateful for his work. James will still be involved in the conversations and is on the FoldingCoin Board of Directors still, but his time needs to go towards his local community which needs him now. But the horizon looks great for FoldingCoin as I am talking to other interested parties in picking up where James left off. This could also be a good thing as having a fresh set of eyes on the project can help improve areas that we have needed help in. Joe has already fixed some issues that we had before that slipped from our eyes, so I am very excited for what is in the future for FoldingCoin this year. For a full report, you can watch last weeks public meeting or you can read the Community Update that I posted on the FoldingCoin website.

Shout Outs and Sponsorships

  • This weeks shout out goes to JP Janseen. On the forums, JP was looking for someone to take over the Counterpartynews.com domain, but he wanted to give it to someone in the community who would develop it for the community. AI am happy that JP has entrusted me to take on the domain, and I hope it serves the community well. Thanks JP for the domain, and I will hopefully be able to turn it into something wonderful.
